Discussion Post: Breaking Dawn Part 1

Okay everybody,

I went to see Breaking Dawn Part 1 last Saturday.  I definitely have some opinions, and I really want to know what everyone else's thoughts were.   For those of you who have NOT seen the movie yet, please stop reading here, as I don't want to spoil it for anyone, or give anyone pre-conceived notions.  I have had people give me their opinion of a movie I haven't seen yet, and when I went to see it, all I could think about was what they had to say about the movie... so I was unable to enjoy it and figure out if I liked it myself.  So please don't read further if you don't want to have it spoiled for you....

SPOILER ALERT................

Okay, first of all, let's talk about the pacing of the story.  I knew at the outset that this movie was probably going to be a bit slower than the others because most of the action takes place in the last half of the book, which will basically be the next movie.  But I did have a few issues with the pacing of this movie, even knowing what to expect.  Did anyone else feel that they drew out the wedding scene a little too much?  I think they could have condensed that just slightly.  Granted, a lot of that was important set up for things to come in the second movie, but it seems like a lot of stuff was packed in that could have been left our or condensed.

As far as the honeymoon scene went, I thought they did a pretty good job on that one.  Bella trying to tempt Edward into a second night of fun was really cute and got some chuckles out of me.  I also thought they did the love scene very tastefully, while still getting across the important point, which was that sleeping with Edward came with hazzards.

Did Bella look like a two week dead corpse or what?  I am amazed at how bad and skeletal they made her look.  Great job with the special effects there.  It was almost painful to look at her, and it really did bring that part of the book to life for me.  Very well done.

Finally, let's talk about what was, to me, the most pivotal scene in the movie, and the book.  The birth scene.  I think they did a very good job with this scene and bringing it to life.  I had been so wary of what this scene was going to turn out like because I knew they had only gotten a PG13 rating.  I was really scared that they were going to water this scene down so much to fit that rating that it would lose a lot of the impact and drama, but it really didn't.  About the only thing I can really say I was disappointed in was just one thing...  In the book, Jacob kind of gives up on Bella, and Edward, still determined, is still trying to turn her and revive her.  He gets angry at Jacob's "oh, she's dead, just stop" attitude, and he screams at him like "fine, go!"  I really wanted to see that in the movie, because I felt this was a defining moment for the love triangle.  This was the moment that, to me, Edward proves that he is and always was the one that was truly  meant for Bella.  Because when all hoped seemed lost, Edward didn't give up, but Jacob did.  I thought this was an extremely important point, and I don't feel that they conveyed this in the movie.  So that was somewhat disappointing.  BUT....

They made up for it with the moment of imprinting.  So much of what happened in the book at the moment Jacob imprinted with Renesmee was so internal.  I was wondering how they were going to make all that internal stuff visual.  They did a fabulous job with this with the little scenes in his head, imagining Renesmee at various stages, and showing himself in her life in those stages being what she needs at that age.  I was so pleased with this!!

Okay, so what did everyone else think?  Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts on the movie.
