When Annelise meets dark and seductive Ronan, he promises her a new life-if she has the courage to chance the unknown. Now, she's whisked away to a mysterious island and pitted against other female recruits to become a Watcher-girls who are partnered with vampires and assist them in their missions. To survive and become a Watcher, Annelise has to beat out every other girl, but she's determined to do so, because to fail doesn't mean dishonor-it means death.
Teaser from page 57: "My specialty was that I knew how to take a punch?  It appeared that spending my formative years getting smacked around by my dad may have earned me the privilege of getting smacked around by a bunch of vampires.  The thought sent cold dread twining through my belly."

Destined by Jessie Harrell

Destined by Jessie Harrell
Release Date: November 17, 2011
Publisher: Mae Day Publishing

When Psyche receives a prophecy gone horribly wrong, she learns that even the most beautiful girl in Greece can have a hideous future. Her fate? Fall in love with the one creature even the gods fear.  As she feels herself slipping closer into the arms of the prophecy, Psyche must choose between the terrifyingly tender touch she feels almost powerless to resist and the one constant she's come to expect out of life: you cannot escape what is destined. - Goodreads.com

Anyone whose read my blog for any length of time knows how much I love mythology and retellings.  This has got to be one of the most enjoyable ones I've ever read.  Who wouldn't love a retelling of this story... where you get to see the god of love fall in love himself.  So fun!!

Psyche has a beauty that rivals that of Helen of Troy.  The world knows her as the most beautiful girl, and she's been blessed to be dubbed as the "daughter" or Aphrodite, which is an honorary title, but apparently taken pretty seriously.  Her family knows that half the world will be coming to try to marry her, but Aphrodite has other ideas.  She wants Psyche to marry her son, Eros.  Of course, he seems to take an instant dislike to her (she's too beautiful and reminds him of a human he'd once loved who dumped him), and she doesn't react well to his antagonism.  Suffice it to say, she refuses Aphrodite, which causes that goddess to want her to suffer.  She demands that her son use his love arrows to make her fall for someone or something truly dreadful as punishment.  Except, the more time he spends watching her, the more Eros realizes what a big mistake he made.

For much of the book, Psyche doesn't know that the man she's falling for is, in fact, Eros himself.  He's arranged things where she's now his, living in a special place he created, but she has no idea who he is.  Watching this god try to woo her was so sweet and romantic.  He was sexy, arrogant, but when she begins to bring out the best in him, he becomes sweet, gentle, and caring to her.  You had to love him.

For her part, Psyche was a brave character, undertaking a quest that many would be fearful of.  But she does it, not once, but a couple times.

This was a great story that satisfied both my romance and mythology craving in a single stroke.  I absolutely loved this story and devoured it in one sitting.  Great writing!!

Existence by Abbi Glines

Existence by Abbi Glines
Release Date: December 13, 2011
Publisher: Wild Child Publishing

What happens when you're stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course.  Pagan Moore doesn't cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him.  Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn't let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he's dead.  Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.  He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.  - Goodreads.com

I've read several different takes on the "Death Takes a Holiday" story, with the movie Meet Joe Black being chief among them.  Existence was another, but the author gave it a unique twist that made it new and different.  Pagan's time is up and the incredibly sexy guy at the picnic table is actually there to collect her soul.  And yet... that doesn't happen....

One of the things I liked about this was that it wasn't an insta-love.  Pagan goes through several stages here before she begins to feel emotions toward this mystery boy.  I loved the interactions between these two... although Pagan doesn't understand what she's up against at first.  For his part, he is mysterious, kind, sexy, and so intriguing to read about.

There's a portion of the book where the two are apart, and it almost broke my heart reading how badly Pagan took it.  It was sad, and you had to feel so bad for her.  When the big moment comes, you find out a whole lot more about what's going on that him being there to collect a soul.  There are ramifications to what he's done that, unfortunately, we won't find out about fully until the next book.  But read this, and you will want to read the next one.

Abbi Glines has a knack for creating believable, sympathetic characters that you just care about.  They are compelling and three-dimensional.  Her writing is at times simple and straightforward, and then beautiful and compelling.  A great story and a great author!!

Hunting Lila by Sarah Alderson

Hunting Lila by Sarah Alderson
Release Date: August 5, 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster

17-year-old Lila has two secrets she's prepared to take to the grave. The first is that she can move things just by looking at them. The second is that she's been in love with her brother's best friend, Alex, since forever. After a mugging exposes her unique ability, Lila decides to run to the only people she can trust - her brother and Alex. They live in Southern California where they work for a secret organisation called The Unit, and Lila discovers that the two of them are hunting down the men who murdered her mother five years before. And that they've found them. In a world where nothing and no one is quite as they seem, Lila quickly realises that she is not alone - there are others out there just like her - people with special powers -and her mother's killer is one of them… - Goodreads.com

Hunting Lila was nothing like I expected.  I knew it would have a touch of the paranormal, but the author took this story in directions that I never expected, and it was such a pleasant surprise.

First, the characters.  Lila has traveled from England to be with her brother, and the guy she's always been in love with, her brother's best friend, Alex.  She is determined, strong, and brave.  She's also very inquisitive, so it doesn't really take her long to land herself smack into trouble.  The kind gets her closer to finding out who her mother's killer was, and the kind that will finally bring her to terms with how and where she got her strange ability, and what it means for her future.

Alex was.... well, let's just say, I can totally understand why this young girl has harbored a secret love for this guy for years.  Alex was a great character.  He was sexy and badass, but also sweet and honorable.  She couldn't help loving him, and neither could I.  Their interactions together are thick with tension, emotion and attraction.  It was so fun to read... but it wasn't overdone.  It built appropriately.

When the pivotal moments come and you finally figure out what's going on, it was very surprising, at least for me.  I didn't see that coming in a million years, and it causes the reader to question everything they thought they knew up until that point.

Sarah Alderson has created a great story here, and it appears to be the beginning of a series.  I am really eager to get my hands on the next book!!  Great writing, great characters, great story.

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

My teaser this week comes from:

Crave (The Clann #1) - Melissa Darnell

Small blurb from Goodreads.com: Savannah Colbert has never known why she's so hated by the kids of the Clann. Nor can she deny her instinct to get close to Clann golden boy Tristan Coleman. Especially when she recovers from a strange illness and the attraction becomes nearly irresistible. It's as if he's a magnet, pulling her gaze, her thoughts, even her dreams. Her family has warned her to have nothing to do with him, or any members of the Clann. But when Tristan is suddenly everywhere she goes, Savannah fears she's destined to fail.  For years, Tristan has been forbidden to even speak to Savannah Colbert. Then Savannah disappears from school for a week and comes back…different, and suddenly he can't stay away. Boys seem intoxicated just from looking at her. His own family becomes stricter than ever. And Tristan has to fight his own urge to protect her, to be near her no matter the consequences….

Teaser from page 58: "The guy braced one hand on Savannah's table, another hand on the back of her chair, and leaned down toward her.  I sat up, my hands clenching into fists on my thighs.  Back off.  Now, I thought to the would-be Romeo, adding a little magical push to the thought.  Some humans were too thickheadeded to pick up on Clann mental commands.  This guy wasn't, thankfully.  His head shot up and he looked toward me."

Come share your teasers for this week!

Crave (The Clann #1) - Melissa Darnell

I want more RIGHT NOW!!  Great book.  It had just about everything you need to make a perfect mix.  The adventure/mystery in the story was there, with Savannah having to figure out the changes in herself, what's going on with those around her, and where her family comes from.  Then there's the aspect of her being an outcast among her peers.  She has one or two people who like her, but it must be strange to go to school and know that everyone hates you, and not in the regular, (normal?) 'kids can be so cruel' variety.  More like a 'we have a strange, unknown vendetta against you and would be perfectly happy to see you dead' kind.  Then she has some pretty weird changes going on in her body (don't think puberty, think paranormal).  And then... there's the strange, undeniable, and unctrollable attraction and emotion she feels toward the leader of the kids that hate her...Tristan.  And his for her!  What a combination.

This book just worked for me.  In every way.  I was utterly captivated and sucked in from the very first page, the first sentence!  And I stayed up all night to finish reading it.  I'm not sure what it was that made it so perfect for me, but it just had that indefinable magic to it (no pun intended) that made it compelling and made me unable to put it down.

Savannah is a strong character, interesting, and Tristan was just absolutely adorable, sexy, honorable, and intriguing.  Where this story takes them was shocking, and I hate that it ended there!  I want more!  I have got to find out what happens next.

Great story, awesome, fluid writing with great pacing.  Put this one on your To Be Read pile and you won't regret it.  I can't wait for the next one, Covet, coming out some time this year.
