What happens when you're stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course.  Pagan Moore doesn't cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him.  Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn't let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he's dead.  Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.  He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.  -

I've read several different takes on the "Death Takes a Holiday" story, with the movie Meet Joe Black being chief among them.  Existence was another, but the author gave it a unique twist that made it new and different.  Pagan's time is up and the incredibly sexy guy at the picnic table is actually there to collect her soul.  And yet... that doesn't happen....

One of the things I liked about this was that it wasn't an insta-love.  Pagan goes through several stages here before she begins to feel emotions toward this mystery boy.  I loved the interactions between these two... although Pagan doesn't understand what she's up against at first.  For his part, he is mysterious, kind, sexy, and so intriguing to read about.

There's a portion of the book where the two are apart, and it almost broke my heart reading how badly Pagan took it.  It was sad, and you had to feel so bad for her.  When the big moment comes, you find out a whole lot more about what's going on that him being there to collect a soul.  There are ramifications to what he's done that, unfortunately, we won't find out about fully until the next book.  But read this, and you will want to read the next one.

Abbi Glines has a knack for creating believable, sympathetic characters that you just care about.  They are compelling and three-dimensional.  Her writing is at times simple and straightforward, and then beautiful and compelling.  A great story and a great author!!
