Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep

Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep
Release Date: May 29, 2012
Publisher: Kensington

I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me—again.  Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects—and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me?  It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me—and I’m in for the fight of my life.  -

Jennifer Estep has "stepped" it up in Dark Frost!!  What an awesome installment to the Mythos Academy series.  This is one of those series that just keeps getting better and better in each book.  It's hard, if impossible, to find anything negative to say about this story at all.  Nope, I got nothing.

The characters are one of my favorite aspects.  Gwen is smart, determined, and knows how to investigate things.  How she's able to investigate and work some of the things out that she does in all three books, makes me just love her smarts and resourcefulness.  There was one moment where I thought, no, Gwen, don't do it... but she did anyway.  If she was prone to these little lapses often, I'd probably want to smack her, but she's usually so smart and ahead of the game, that to make one small slip was expected, even if you didn't want to see her do it.

Logan fans, never fear.  You'll get plenty of Logan in this story.  This is another aspect of the series that I love... the relationship between Gwen and Logan.  I think so much fo the time, authors make the mistake of getting the main characters together firmly in the first book, and then there's really no romance to root for in the next books because everything is already perfect.  Not so here.  Logan and Gwen care about each other, but things are not perfect, and it makes the story that much more compelling, because Jennifer Estep isn't just throwing everything out there all at one time for instant gratification... she's slowly feeding us bits and pieces of these two and making each moment even more gratifying.

The writing is tight, fast-paced, and just exciting.  The story, the myths, the romance, everything... it all fits together so well.  The stakes are definitely raised in this story, and now I'm dying for book four to come out.  Another awesome book for an awesome series!
