Deity (Covenant #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: November 6, 2012
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press

Alexandria isn't sure she's going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she's a goner... and so is Aiden.  If that's not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.  But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she's caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed... and destroyed.  Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate... -

When I finished Pure, the second installment in this series, I thought I had it all figured out.  I thought I knew what guy I wanted, how I wanted things to pan out, and exactly how the story was going to go.  I tend to be able to do that...figure out a story's direction before it happens.  Jennifer Armentrout, however, had other ideas and completely floored me.  I never could have guessed what she's done with this latest book.

First off, the characters are true to form, with the same sympathetic personalities and quirks that I fell in love with before.  Alex is still one of my favorite heroines in any series, so brave, so passionate, and a whole lot wreckless.  But there are depths to her in this story which are new and exciting, showing a growth that is gratifying to watch, where she spends just the slightest bit of time thinking before reacting.  Although I loved her wreckless action in prior books, it was great to see her personality taking on some new characteristics and nuances that make her that much more likeable.    Aiden is amazingly brave and sweet and sexy, and just all around the great guy you can't help but love.  There were points in this story where he had my toes curling.  And Seth... wow.  What can I say.  Just when I think I have him figured out, he pulls the carpet out from under me and I'm left stunned and amazed.  This is such a complex character and you can't help but love him, even as you know there's a darkness to him that you may not like if you could see what you're sensing.

This story went to a new place that had me completely breathless with anticipation.  This made the pacing off the charts, with action hopping you from one event to the other almost nonstop.  I pretty much devoured the book in one sitting.  I knew this series was great before, but this installment made it go epic.  There are twists and turns I never saw coming, new developments and revelations that were a complete shock and literally caused my jaw to unhinge.  Suffice it to say, my book boyfriend allegiance has switched again, even as I wish it was possible she could be with both guys.  I love them both and it's so hard to choose.  One clearly emerges as the current victor, although I wouldn't count anything out at this point.  I was an enormous fan of one of the guys in book one, switched to the other in book two, and now am back to the first.  Who knows what Jennifer will cause me to do in book four!

Finally, let's give some love to Jennifer for her amazing writing.  Aside from devising an incredibly unique story, her writing alone just makes that story shine.  It is fast-paced, touching, funny, and full of adventure.  There's no way to guess what's coming, even though she plants clues here and there.  You turn the page and still find yourself amazed and gasping aloud at something else.  And does she know how to end a book!  This story stops at the mother of all cliffhangers, and you could practically hear my agonized wail two miles down the road.  The next book can't come soon enough, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
