At last, Zoey has what she wanted: the truth is out. Neferet's evil has been exposed, and the High Council is no longer on her side -- but she's far from done wreaking havoc in the vampyre world. First, a mysterious fire ravages the stables. Then, Neferet makes a devastating move that will test them all.
With the seeds of distrust sown and Darkness breeding chaos at the House of Night, everyone must band together -- but that's proving to be more difficult than ever before. The twins are barely speaking and the House of Night's former enemy, Kalona, has now become their warrior, pushing their trust to the limit. To top it off, Zoey is pretty darn sure she might be losing her mind. She saw something when she looked at Aurox through the Seer Stone that she can hardly explain to herself, let alone her friends. Is it possible that Heath has come back in a different form? Is that why Zoey's so intrigued by Aurox, when it's so obvious that he's dangerous? And who would believe her if she told them? Zoey knows that following her instinct about Aurox might be just what they need to defeat evil . . . but if she's wrong, it could cause the destruction of those closest to her.  With the tension at a breaking point and friendships on the line, can the nerd herd come together to stop the spread of Darkness before it's too late?  -

Spoiler alert!  Finally!  We're finally getting somewhere.  This is the first House of Night book in the last four or five books where I feel like we've finally made some headway, and that the story is progressing rather than just churning back over old ground.  I actually enjoyed this one!

The kids are finally maturing and changing.  There's a rift between the two twins, and I know this may sound bad, but I loved it!  They're not just silly background noise now.  They have two distinct personalities and I felt like I was getting to know two brand new characters, but they added a lot to the story.  Zoey has still managed to stick to just one guy, so yay!  Zoey's insecurity did seem a bit out of character though.

My biggest yay about this one is that the vampire high counsil finally knows that Neferet is evil.  Yay!!!  It only took about four or five books for them to figure it out despite overwhelming evidence and numerous witness testimonials.  So I definitely feel like we're making headway here.

I loved how Thanatos, Kolona and others all worked together with the nerd herd at the end of this one, and yes, although the obligatory and predictable circle was cast at the end like always, it actually didn't work as planned, and the characters had to figure out another way to fight their way through at the end.  How refreshing!

So yes, I liked this one... I felt like we got somewhere.  I felt like we're finally back on track in this series, and I felt like I'm back in it.  I don't mind waiting for the next installment now, whereas before, I was just hanging on because I had to see how it ended after investing so much time reading the series.  Now I'm hanging on a little bit more cheerfully.
