Mackenzie Wellesley has spent her life avoiding the spotlight. At Smith High, she's the awkward junior people only notice when they need help with homework. Until she sends a burly football player flying with her massive backpack and makes a disastrous - not to mention unwelcome - attempt at CPR. Before the day is out, the whole fiasco explodes on YouTube. And then the strangest thing happens. Suddenly, Mackenzie is an Internet sensation, with four million hits and counting. Sucked into a whirlwind of rock stars, paparazzi, and free designer clothes, she even catches the eye of the most popular guy at school. And that's when life gets really interesting... - Goodreads.com
I hope you all like contemporaries because I've been on a big contemporary kick lately. This was such a cute, fun story to add to my contemp list, and it was just the kind of book you want if you're looking for pure entertainment, fun, and cute romance. I loved it!
So you've got Mackenzie... a girl no one notices and who wants nothing more than to just blend in and not be noticed. She's kind of a klutz, and she has a habit of saying and doing the wrong thing. So obviously, her desire to go unnoticed is pretty well explained. Take a person like that and put them in the opposite situation, where they are noticed and known by everyone and all of their little faux pas are on full display, and it's unbearable for them. This is Mackenzie. You just had to feel for her... who wants to know that all the little things they hate about themselves, and all the things that make them ashamed are out there for the entire world to see? She has to handle this, and she does so in her cute little Mackenzie way because she's so funny and quirky. Her little factoids made her character so real. You just had to fall in love with her.
Then you've got the guy. I won't say who it is because I don't want to ruin anything. But how cute was he? Yes, he's popular.... yes, he's kind of Mr. perfect, but he's so sweet, and such a good guy. He's not your average jock... he had depth. Was it a little cliché that the popular, unattainable guy falls for the geeky, klutzy girl? Well, of course it is, but who doesn't love a story like that? Everyone wants to read about an underdog that gets ahead, achieves her dreams, grows confidence, and gets the unattainable boy.
I absolutely loved it. Add to that the fact that she ends up being exactly who she needs to be in the end... she grows that confidence and becomes proud of who she is. It's such a sweet and cute journey. If you're in the mood for a simple, fun, and heart-warming story... this is the book for you.
