The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden by Jessica Sorensen

The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden by Jessica Sorensen
Release Date: December 13, 2012

There are those who don’t get luck handed to them on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.  Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.  For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him.  Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved.  - Goodreads.com

What a gem! I'm so glad I found this book. I can't remember how I even found it, but I'm so happy that I did.  This was a wonderful book and I absolutely loved it!  Everything about it just worked for me, from the story, the characters, the romance, and the writing.  It all just worked together beautifully.

Callie was a great character.  After going through something so horrible, how she is able to stay strong and even care more about another than she does for herself.  But maybe something in Kayden called to her.  What he has gone through is just as bad, and that moment together changes everything for both of them.  What they each came from, what they went through together that one night, made the whole "popular guy and not so popular girl" story really work rather than becoming a cliché.  They bonded over this event, and it made for a believable, touching story.  I loved these two together, and how poignant their romance was.

The ending... wow, what a cliffhanger.  I'm dying here, waiting on the next book to find out what happens.  This is brutal.

I've been a Jessica Sorensen fan for a while for some of her other books, but I've never read something like this from her.  This showed another side to her writing for me that is amazing.  The emotional depth she takes the reader to in this story was profound.  I was alternately heartened, then heart-broken.  The writing was raw and real and so touching.

I loved it!
