The Beltane Escape by Ariella Moon
Release Date: February 2, 2016
Publisher: Star Tribe Publishing
Genre: Fantasy, Historical

Lady Fenella, ever surrounded by guards, knows only responsibility and duty. She believes Merlin and the Lady of the Lake are myths, Gran’s warnings about Fairy are superstition, and Fairy was invented to make children behave.

But then Gran brands her, Lord Argonshire kidnaps her, and the Lady of the Lake makes her a pawn. The Highland heiress must betray her newly betrothed and fend for herself when she dives into a wormhole to save her cousin. She lands in a part of Fairy even fairies avoid, and joins forces with Talfryn, a half-Viking/half-Fairy.

Fenella must use her wits to find her cousin, free the Lady of the Lake, and reach the wormhole in Glastonbury by Beltane. Nine days to unshackle herself from a sorceress, prevent a war between rival clans, and decide in which realm—and with which lad—she truly belongs. Oh, and The Most Powerful Wizard stands in her way.

I've been looking for a whimsical, magical story that might bring back some of the old and lovely feelings I had when reading Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series, and this book did it.  From the very beginning, the story swept me away into a wonderful, magical world where there are faeries, cool creatures, a spunky heroine, and a love triangle.

I loved the characters from the first page and as they were introduced.  I like how the story centered first on a quest, and the characterization gradually unfolds.  They weren't just dumped into the story and you were left to catch up.  You were able to get to know them bit by bit.  Like pealing back layers, new things were revealed, and I loved that!

The overall story was exciting, blending a couple different legends and worlds into one. There was a type of time travel, a faerie world, Scotland, and much more.  There were so many wonderful elements that moved together to make the story so intriguing, energetic and fun.

I loved the author's writing, and am so eagerly awaiting book two of this trilogy.  I'm dying to know what happens next!  A great start to a what will undoubtedly be a wonderful new series!
